We’re Hiring! Help Build the Future of Biodiversity Research
We’re excited to announce a new, full-time position opening for a Research Software Engineer / Data Scientist, who will focus on biodiversity and bioacoustics research. Apply now.
Around the world, researchers, Indigenous communities, and environmental practitioners rely on data to understand ecosystems, monitor biodiversity, and respond to accelerating environmental change. Yet many of the tools and workflows needed for this work remain difficult to use, inaccessible, or limited in scalability. At DSE, we’re working to help change that and looking for someone to join us in building the next generation of environmental data science infrastructure.
🌎 About the Role
You will play a central role in designing, developing, and maintaining the core data infrastructure and research software that powers our biodiversity and bioacoustics projects, including Soundhub. Soundhub is a new web platform for storing and analyzing bioacoustic data. You will collaborate with researchers, engineers, and partners across UC Berkeley and beyond to help build out Soundhub and other relevant tools that are scalable, reliable, and grounded in human-centered design.
We are thrilled to collaborate with the Geospatial Informatics Facility (GIF) and California Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) on these efforts. The work is highly interdisciplinary: one day you may be developing APIs or workflow automations, and the next you may be supporting biodiversity analysis methods, contributing to research design, or building interactive data-enabled tools that help practitioners make sense of complex environmental datasets.
This position also includes a strong research component. You’ll have opportunities to contribute to peer-reviewed publications, help shape future research directions, present your work to diverse audiences, and collaborate with academic and community partners.
What You’ll Do
- Build and maintain high-performance computing workflows, data infrastructure, and research software
- Develop and improve workflows for biodiversity data and bioacoustics analysis
- Help with grant reporting
- Create interactive tools, visualizations, and data-driven interfaces
- Lead technical components of select projects
- Contribute your expertise across multiple DSE program areas
- Participate in research design, publications, and collaborative partnerships

Who We’re Looking For
We're seeking someone with strong software development experience and an interest in applying those skills to biodiversity, bioacoustics, and environmental research. You’re excited about building tools that are open, creative, thoughtful, and accessible. You thrive in collaborative environments and care deeply about developing technology that genuinely supports users, whether they are researchers, Indigenous partners, or on-the-ground practitioners.
This role is an excellent fit for someone who enjoys working across disciplines and wants their work to have a real-world environmental impact.
Salary and Benefits
The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $111,000.00 - $116,000.00. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), exempt career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
Don’t Meet Every Requirement? Please Apply!
We know that no candidate will have every skill or experience listed. If you are passionate about this work and eager to learn, we strongly encourage you to apply. Your perspective, curiosity, and commitment matter just as much as your resume.
Join Us
At DSE, we believe that building responsible, accessible, and community-informed tools is crucial for tackling today’s environmental challenges. If you’re excited about contributing to that mission, and helping shape the future of biodiversity research, we’d love to hear from you.
