We are thrilled to announce that Alejandra Echeverri, Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management, joins our leadership team as the newest Faculty Advisor! Professor Echeverri is an interdisciplinary conservation scientist whose research explores human–wildlife interactions, cultural values of nature, and the impacts of people on biodiversity.

DSE and the Karuk Wildlife Team are thrilled to share new research in Ecology and Evolution that validates the importance of implementing local Indigenous knowledge in studies on biodiversity and population changes over time. Our paper provides groundbreaking analysis on how the Wildlife Team’s traditional knowledge, research, and citizen-science efforts support elk restoration and presents a potential model for Indigenous-led conservation efforts worldwide.

Last month DSE participated in the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia (COP16). COP16 was the world’s largest biodiversity event to date. It builds on the inaugural COP in 1994 and the global conferences that have followed since.
