By DSE November 1, 2024

What: At DSE we combine the power of computing and environmental science with open science principles and a commitment to inclusivity—all towards the purpose of building tangible, replicable, and accessible solutions to environmental problems.

DSE is hiring students from the School of Journalism to join our team this spring! Help us creatively communicate our work to external audiences including policymakers, Tribes, public lands managers, private companies, and others. Using your unique skills and preferred medium(s), you will help shine a light on one of our core projects in Regenerative Agriculture, Fire Resilience, or Snowmelt Monitoring.

For example, our team created a data visualization tool to help global policymakers understand the impacts of proposed treaties to reduce plastic pollution. For your project you might create a short film depicting the complexities and opportunities that National Park rangers face in wildfire recovery. Or you might use photos and graphics to promote the economic and environmental benefits of regenerative agriculture for local farmers. The possibilities are endless and we encourage your creativity!

You do not need to have a background in environmental studies or data science to apply – but curiosity and excitement for our work is a must! We welcome students with all interests and backgrounds. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for you to learn and grow into your dream career.

Why: We must act smarter and faster to head off severe consequences for climate change, the global extinction crisis, and environmental injustice. Data science offers a transformative opportunity to increase the rate and impact of environmental problem-solving. At the same time, smart journalism is critical to help bridge the gap between scientists, decision makers, and local communities on the frontlines of climate change.

When: Spring Semester 2025

Compensation: This is a paid internship at $20/hour, 10 hours per week. You are eligible to apply if you have other appointments as long as your total working hours do not exceed 19.5 weekly hours.

Application Process: To apply please use this Google Form to submit your resume and answer these brief prompts by Friday, November 22 at 12pm. Please contact Suzanne Spencer: suzannespencer@berkeley.edu with any questions.
