By Douglas McCauley September 21, 2022

We are excited to share that the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and Environment at Berkeley (DSE) has named Kevin Koy as Executive Director where he is now working to enable the Center’s mission to develop impactful computational solutions to the challenges facing our environment.

Kevin

Kevin brings more than two decades of experience working in environmental science, data science, and human-centered design, including nearly a decade of service at UC Berkeley. He previously served as the founding Executive Director of the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS), Managing Director of Stanford University’s Data Science and AI Affiliates Programs, Executive Director of UC Berkeley’s Geospatial Innovation Facility (GIF), and as a Geospatial/Remote Sensing Specialist for the American Museum of Natural History's Center for Biodiversity & Conservation and the Smithsonian Institution’s Conservation Biology Institute.

Most recently, Kevin comes to the Schmidt DSE from the global design and innovation firm IDEO, where he served as Senior Director, working to develop a data-enabled design practice and co-leading the Research and Insights craft across North America. There he built teams to help solve problems for a wide range of clients spanning industry, non-profit, and government that enabled them to develop products and services that meet the needs of people.

Kevin is thrilled to return to Berkeley and is inspired to see the incredible work happening across campus.

The Schmidt DSE has a lot of work ahead as we build our team and capabilities. We look forward to learning from all those already engaged in developing solutions that can benefit pressing environmental challenges and narrowing in on opportunities for the DSE to add to this important work, while also contributing to the exciting culture and community of ESPM and CDSS.
